My first commercial story was too long.
Actually, it was WAY too long!
The editors at the magazine who bought the story sent it back and the biggest markup was about how to shorten the text. And they were 100% right.
After a week or so more work, the story went from just shy of 10,000 words down to just over 6,000.
And to top it all off, the story was much better because of the compression.
