Rules for Authors – Number Two

What follows is one of my Rules for Authors.

These rules are things that all real authors should make a part of their mentality and are words to live by. Trust me…

After more than twenty-five years in this crazy business, I have learned these things well and they do make a difference!

No. 2 – Never pay to have your book edited.

See also Rules 1, 3, and 4 as they are closely related to this Rule.

As outlined in Rule Number 1, editing is a part of the cost of doing business, but that cost belongs to the publisher, NOT the author. The biggest reason is Rule Number 1 itself, that money flows TO the author, but there are other more subtle reasons.

The biggest of these has to do with the attitude and approach to the editing task.

A contracted editor working for (and being paid by) the writer makes their money by getting writers to come to them to edit their work. A huge percentage of that income is from repeat business where a writer keeps coming back to have books edited. There is also the word-of-mouth advertising where a writer tells their friends how great John Doe edits their books. This all means that the editor has a vested interest in getting the writers to like them.

As a group, writers have pretty big and fragile egos. We sweat blood, laugh, cry, pull our hair out in clumps, fall in love with our characters, learn to hate some other characters, and in general see our stories as our children. Just like a momma bear, we will defend our stories to the death. If someone attacks our story, we will come to hate that person. In business, we will look for someone who treats us—and our stories—better and likes them just the way we write them.

See the problem here?

The contracted editor will tend to tell us what we want to hear. This may or may not be intentional, but the tendency is to say what the writer wants to hear so we like the editor and will come back to them and tell our friends how great they are.

In other words, for a contracted editor, they have no interest in if the book sells or not. Their income is based on how much the writer likes them. The contracted editor must have the writers like them in order to make a living.

Now let’s look at an editor that works for the publisher…

The publisher’s editors are paid by the publisher. They might be paid on salary (or hourly), or they might be paid per book that they edit. Some publishers even pay a royalty to their editors. It varies, but the bottom line is that the publisher pays the editor, not the writer.

This boils down to the fact that the editor (and publisher) doesn’t care if the writer likes the editor or not. The editor’s job is to massage the story into something that will sell. If they fail to do so, they won’t work for the publisher for very long.

Both of these editors are motivated by money, but the source of the money is the difference…

Contracted editors only make money if the writers like them.

Publisher’s editors only make money if the story sells.

See the difference?

Rules for Authors – Number One

What follows is one of my Rules for Authors.

These Rules are things that all real authors should make a part of their mentality and are words to live by. Trust me…

After more than twenty-five years in this crazy business, I have learned these things well and they do make a difference!

No. 1 – Money flows TO the author.

While most of the Rules for Authors are not in any particular order of importance, this is number one for a reason: It is THE most important Rule and actually summarizes many of the other Rules into one easy to understand concept.

So, what does it mean?

Simply stated, the author should always be paid for their work and should never pay someone else in order to create their work. See Rules 2, 3, and 4 in particular.

As stated in Rule Number 4, if an author pays a “publisher” for editing, cover art, or anything else, you don’t have a publisher at all…you have a printer.

Think about it…

If you need some business cards, you go to a printer. They will, if you desire, create the artwork, layout, and other technical details for you, and then they will print, cut, and package your cards and ship them to you. You pay the printer for these services, and the printer deserves to be paid for these services. The only place they make any money is by providing those services to you.

A publisher makes their money by selling books. Editing (from acquisitions, to line, to content, and every other stage) is simply getting that product ready for market. The cover art is just marketing. These things are a normal part of the costs of doing business—just like the electric bill—for the publisher.

In other words, these costs are NOT the direct responsibility of the author.

Yes, I know…

The higher the costs of the publisher, the less they can afford to pay the author in terms of royalties, but this is another problem most writers (as opposed to authors) have in their thought processes…an editor (or artist) working for a publisher can process more books for less money than can an independent contractor.

They also do a better job.

If you hire an editor to work on your book, they have a vested interest in saying everything is perfect. Why? Because you are paying them. The more you like them and the more they stroke your ego, the more likely you are to bring them more work in the future.

The publisher’s editors get paid no matter if you like them or not. They keep their job by editing books into something that will sell for the publisher, so they don’t care about your feelings.

And never lose sight of the fact that this is a business. We are all—authors, publishers, editors, artists, etc.—here to make money.

Oh, don’t give me that crap that you write for the joy of writing or that you want to change the world.

You’re going to starve to death with that attitude. Get over it.

Remember that writing is a lot like sex…

At first you do it because it’s fun.

Then you do it for a few close friends.

But if you’re any good at all, you end up doing it for money.

Catching Up…

Sadly, I’ve been remiss in posting to my blog for the last couple of weeks. I have a ton of excuses, but very few reasons…

As many of you know, we recently completed a rather large move. Even small moves are a pain in the ass, but try it to another continent. Things on that front have quieted down a bit, though it will pick up again soon with the completion of some construction and arrival of more of our stuff. What fun that will be!

Add to this the similar relocation of the entire business. Yeah, it gets out of hand VERY quickly!

Through all of that, I also had no time for my real job: Writing. This added up to the need to focus on a number of projects that had taken back-burner status until people started to scream, so I had to jump on those and get the work done. I was literally locked in my office for days at a time.

There are two big things I want to pass along to you…one is technically past and the other happens in only a couple of days.

The first is that my son JJ (Jack, Jr.) turned four on the 26th. He looks more and more like his dad every day, and that’s a good thing. I admit that I’m biased, but Jack is drop-dead gorgeous, and JJ is following suit. On the other hand, JJ is also developing a lot of the extreme alpha male attitude of his dad. I’m OK with that because along with the attitude is an intense respect for the female of the species. JJ treats his sisters and me with care and has never been disrespectful to us. I suspect that as he gets older, he will also take on a role of protecting his sisters. It looks like JJ will also be as big as his dad (6’9″ and 265 pounds), so God help the boy who mistreats his sisters. Jack, however, is not so good with having another alpha male in the house. JJ will sometimes be a bit defiant when his dad asks him to do something. So far, JJ has always backed down and done as he was told, but the smell of testosterone sometimes gets pretty strong. Funny part is that if I (or his sisters) ask JJ to do the exact same thing, he is happy to comply.

In any event, Happy Birthday, JJ.

Next, Jack’s birthday is this coming Tuesday (May 1st). Since it’s not supposed to bother men, I’ll tell you that Jack will be 51. But he’s not getting older, he’s getting better. While 51 is not “old”, Jack is in great shape. Habits he learned from his military service (Jack was a SEAL) and in law enforcement (FBI, US Marshalls, and the Secret Service) have stayed with him. He walks several miles a day, works out in the gym with weights and various machines, and plays with the kids in active sports several times a week. He watches his diet and, like me, drinks very little. He quit smoking when I was pregnant with JJ. In short, Jack takes care of himself. He does that not only for his own benefit, but because he knows that the kids and I all need and want him around for a long time.

Happy Birthday, my love.

As for what’s next, that’s complicated…

I want to get back into the swing of things and focus on some of my erotica romance work. I have not less than five books at various stages of completion that I need to finish and get off to the publishers. I wish I could give you a timeline, but I have no clue. There are other things in the writing arena that are also demanding my time.

And I promise to post here more frequently. Really…I do!

Keep Loving!

A Moving Experience…

A Moving Experience…

Yes, the Great Move is finally completed. Well, as complete as it gets for right now.

Maybe a quarter of our stuff is here in Rio now. The rest is coming by the slow route…a truck from California to Texas, then a boat from Texas to Rio, and then another truck (or series thereof) the more than two hours to the house.

Between the move and million details related to that and a billion more unrelated to the move itself but to getting the house and all settled in, my schedule—both personal and professional—is a disaster. I can’t remember the last time I actually sat down and did any writing. Nor can I remember when I last was able to just relax and think.

But things are slowing down a little.

The place here is very nice, though the actual house we will be living in is still about eight weeks away from being finished. That means the entire place looks like a construction zone. Maybe that’s because it is a construction zone.

The property is an old plantation of some sort. Being in Brazil, maybe I’m better off not knowing what they grew here. There are three houses here now and we are temporarily occupying the largest of them.

This house is fairly big, but not really for three adults and three kids. Luckily, there is a built-in partial solution I’ll get to in a minute. This house will eventually be for Maria, her daughter, and granddaughter. It will be plenty big enough for them.

There is a smaller place that has two bedrooms that we have turned over to our oldest, Amanda. She’s turning the extra bedroom into a music studio and has everything else there she needs. That at least means one less person in this place! The downside is that we may never see Amanda again. Seriously, a huge part of the deal of her getting “her own place” is that she has to come up to “The Big House” (her words, not mine!) for breakfast and dinner with the family.

The third “house” is actually an old barn or storage building of some kind. I’m really not sure what it was used for in the past, but it’s being converted over to almost like apartments for the various staff taking care of security, gardening, and all the rest. Some of the security people in particular work long and odd hours, and we want someplace they can stay instead of driving all the way back to the city.

Interestingly enough, the new house that is being built is very similar to our old place in California. I guess that makes sense since we all really liked that place.

The pool, hot tub, and sauna are all in, but the wiring for the pumps and such is still in process. The roads are all completely done and paved, and the fence and gates are installed, though the automatic openers for a couple of the gates are flakey. The contractors are working on all of that.

We have phones and electricity, but the Internet is still on the odd side. I really don’t understand the system, but we will link via satellite back to our data center in San Diego, and there is a “temporary” dish mounted on a truck parked in the yard right now. Sometimes, we get solid Internet connections at blazing speeds. Other times, dialup would be faster. The real dish is supposed to be installed in about three weeks or so, and I’m told that will solve the problems.

Oh, and the “garage” is still being built. Not much of a rush on that, though, since all of our vehicles are coming on the boat. That includes our trucks (2), car, my motorcycles (4), Amanda’s motorcycle, and Jack’s “project” cars (5). Add in there all the tools and stuff Jacks needs to work on his toys and it gets complicated.

One thing we have talked about is getting a few horses. That will involve a barn or something. Me, I don’t care for horses. Truth be told, I’m about halfway afraid of them, but the girls love horses. Jack enjoys them. I suspect that JJ will like them, too. I guess that means I’m outvoted if it comes to that. We’ll see.

And speaking of the kids, Amanda has been busy getting “her place” the way she wants it, but Debbie and JJ have been a little bored. With so much of their stuff on the slow boat and all of the chaos around here, they haven’t had much to do. Jack and I have been more than a little distracted, so they have had to fend for themselves quite a bit. As always, Maria has been a great help there, and so has Amanda, letting them “help” her with tasks in her little house. But the big thing is that some of the construction crew have sort of taken JJ under their wings. He’s picking up a lot of Portuguese and the old mix of Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Dutch that so many of the locals speak. Like all little boys, JJ is fascinated by the construction equipment and tools, and the workers even had him pounding nails down flush into some boards the other day.

Overall, I think things are going well. Not as fast as I would like them to go, but that’s not too unusual…patience has never been my strong suit.

By the way…did I mention that I really hate moving?

Keep Loving!

Pick A Color…

Here’s something that many of you might have some fun with…

I’m terrible at colors. Really, I am. I know I’m deaf, but maybe I have crazy color-blindness to boot.

Oh, I can see the various colors and I always pass the tests for color-blindness, but I can’t put colors together that look good. I never have been able to do that.

With clothing, it’s easy for me…I stick to a lot of black and white. Long story, so I’ll avoid more on that one for now.

Anyway, I found a kind of neat website at:

http://colorschemedesigner.com/

In short, you can use your mouse to slide around and get different color schemes that, at least in theory, are pleasing. What do I know about that? See above.

So, here’s the deal…

I would love for you folks to go to the above website and pick a color scheme for my website. A few conditions, though…

1. Please stick to the “Mono” option in the upper left-hand area. This will make my life easier when trying to implement your suggested scheme.

2. Next, on the right-hand side (pretty much straight across from the “Mono” option) you will see a funny looking, longish number in the form of a link. This is the “Scheme ID” number. If you click on that link, you will go to a page where that color scheme is the “default” setting of the slider. Follow the link.

3. Lastly, just above the link in #2 above, you will see the four main colors of the scheme. Below the link are the five suggested colors. It’s the five colors I’m interested in. If you have suggestions for where to use each of the fives colors you select, I would like to hear those, too.

Just post a reply to this message with the URL to the page from #2 above along with any suggestions in #3.

I’ll then play with the ideas and see what we come up with!

I know there must be someone out there who doesn’t suffer from my particular brand of color-blindness!

Keep Loving!

PayPal Censorship…

Some of you may know that PayPal has recently decided to enforce their own version of censorship through financial interference with free trade.

Yeah, I know…they sound like Democrats.

Anyway…

In Memory of Alexa

Today is a sad day for me.

Most of you know that I love cats and I have four of my own as well as fostering cats for a couple of local organizations.

I should say that I have only three cats of my own as of now.

Today, one of my favorites and longest lived cats passed away.

Alexa would have been 13 in June. Like all of my cats, she suffered with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), and she lived far longer than most cats with this illness.

Alexa

Alexa-Puddie-Girl 09 FEB 2012

Alexa–also known as “Puddie”–was clearly my cat. She only barely tolerated Jack and the kids. Despite that, Alexa was loving and fun. At least to me.

I got Alexa when she was only 7 weeks old. Her mother was FIP+ and it was known that Alexa would be as well. Over the years, she never once had an outbreak of the illness as many cats with FIP do at around age 3-4.

As near as we can tell, it wasn’t FIP that took Alexa from us, but rather just old age. While 13 isn’t terribly old for a house cat, it’s old enough.

She went to bed last night, and this morning, she was gone. Perhaps a stoke or heart attack took her. It doesn’t matter, though. She didn’t suffer, and she is gone.

Before you ask, yes, I have been crying a lot today. Call me a softy or emotional or whatever you like. I am not ashamed of the tears I have shed for Alexa, nor for those I will continue to shed for a few more days.

In a nutshell, I knew Alexa longer than I have known my husband and kids, and I love her deeply.

And I miss her.

Sleep well, Alexa-Puddie-Girl.

Mom loves you.
